File ending in .wps

Got a file from someone that he says is " Microsoft Works Excel " and
it's name ends in .wps.
Can't open it . I have Excel X for Mac on a MacBook Pro 17 Intel
running Tiger.
Help?

It's a Microsoft Works file, not an XL file. Have them save it as an
Excel (.xls) file.

If that won't work, you can convert .wps to .xls with Dataviz's
MacLinkPlus, but it's pretty expensive for a one-time conversion:
