Hi Ray,
Are you using Office 2007? If so, then the files, such as Word documents saved in the older formats(i.e. .doc) have the blue
square in the lower right corner of the icons used in Windows Explorer while the ones saved in the newer format (i.e. .docx, or
..docm) have the 'traditional' application icons.
I guess it depends on your screen resolution, eyesight, and Windows version of you can see a '2003' in that blue square <g>.

I have noticed that all my old file Icons as well as new files saved as
"97-2003" format have a blue "2003" in the icon. Is there any way for me to
change these Icons so that they do not say "2003"? >>
