File formats

Hi,

I am bit new here but I would like to know if anyone knows abouts MS
current policy regarding MS-Project files.

Are they closed binary formats or are there now XML based with an open
documented description somewhere ?

The .mpp files are binary and closed, but there is an option to save to XML.
