File in Use, Duplicate copy

I am using Excel 97 and Windows XP. Every time I open a
file, says a copy is in use!. Under Explorer I noticed
there are several copies of each file. While in Explorer,
I copied a file, system immediately created a duplicate
copy of the same file!

Any help is appreciated.
