"File is being used by" messages.

When I attempt to open an existing Word 97 document file on my XP system, a window always pops up that states "x-named file is being used by so-and-so (me). Do you want to make a copy?"
Is this happening because Word 97 is incompatible with my XP system?
Or are my Word 97 settings in need of tweeking?
