file menu open of a worksheet makes XL2000 stop responding.

All of a sudden - I did not install, update or reinstall any msoffice
files - excel 2000 on my windows 98 se system has developed a strange
behavior. When I open xl and try to open a file from the file menu, xl
stops responding. The only thing I can do is ctrl-alt-del and end task.
If I'm lucky, I can continue working with the computer, otherwise the
system may also crash (but this is not predictable behavior).
However if I doubleclick the file from explorer or from the desktop,
everything is fine. I can work with the file, make changes, save them,
print, or whatever task I need done. But NOT opening from the file menu.

What can I do to cure excel?
Thanks in advance.

The lamb is dead. I spread the blood on the insides of my computer. Now
the computer is dead, too. It must be the simulated moonlight...

Actually, I looked at the Options|Ignore other applications setting and
noticed it was not selected, so I tried that. It seems so far that the
problem has gone away.
I think Microsoft wants romance in computers. Too many people preach
that if you take away the mystery (by science and knowledge) the world
will be a less wonderful place, so they opt instead for making computers
(the ultimate in knowledge?) mysterious. It keeps the world full of
wonder (though not, maybe, wonderful).

There's too much romance in computers these days. Thats
why I keep getting viagra ads in my email.
