File naming convention for documents saved in previous versions

When students submit documents to me the file name is written with
underscores between the words. The file was not originally saved with the
underscores and students say they are not entering the underscores. Where are
the underscores coming from? Should this indicate to me that the file was
created on an older version of Office? Or, what should these underscores mean
to me?

How are they submitting to you? Is there something your campus network
might be doing?

Ask you local IT guys.

We use WebCT as our on-line course venue. It does not appear to be that
because some files come through with the underscores and others do not. What
I believe it to be and am trying to confirm or correct my thinking is that
the original document was prepared in 2003 and then converted to 2007. Thanks
for responding. I appreciate your time.
