File not available

Whenever I try to open an existing file in Word, I get the message "The file
xxx.doc is not available". (xxx.doc is a made up example) I am unable to
open any existing files, BUT can create and save a NEW file.

Disable the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus.

Hi, lauren. Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton

The error message you quoted is a classic symptom of the Norton Office
Plugin. Did you ever have Norton installed in the past? If so, use the
method suggested for "Norton AntiVirus 2000 or Norton SystemWorks 2000"
to unregister the officeav.dll file.
