File not saving external link values

Hi All, I have a file which has the tool|options "save external link values"
checked. however, each time I reopen the file and choose "NO" to the prompt
which asked whether I should update the linked value, excel goes ahead and
tries to update anyway and returns a #value! error. Is my file corrupt? Is
there a fix for this issue.

Your help is very much appreciated.
