File Open command doesn't work

W

Warren Wood

I have been using Word 2000 as part of Office 2000 for the
past couple of years, and in the last few weeks, the File
Open command has stopped working and I receive the error
message that Word has found an error and must close. Word
opens OK, but I cannot open a file from the opening page
with File Open. However, if Word is not open and I double
click on any .doc file from Explorer, Word opens properly
with the selected file. When Word opens with a blank
page, I am able to write text and edit it in normal
fashion and save the document as usual.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2000 and applied
all the patches with no resolution of this problem. Also
looked in the Knowledge Base but couldn't find anything
resembling my problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check Tools | Macro | Macros to see if there is a macro named FileOpen.

Checked the macros, but there is none named FileOpen.
There are quite a few others, many associated with .pdf
files, and I'm wondering if I ought to try deleting those,
as my File Open problem seems to have arisen about the
same time as I was having difficulty scanning a document
into Acrobat.

You probably won't be able to delete the Adobe macros. But you could try
unloading the Adobe add-in to see if that makes a difference. In Tools |
Templates and Add-ins, uncheck PDFMaker.dot and PDFMakerA.dot. If that
solves the problem, then check the Adobe site for updates to Acrobat (or, if
you have recently upgraded Word, you may need to reinstall Acrobat).
