file open save as navigate long time

In all my Microsoft products, VS05, Office 2003, ... on XP Pro SP2 with
current Microsoft Update, the file open or save as takes forever seemingly to
navigate directories. Explorer works fine. It does not seem to be affected by
turning virus software (Norton ISA) on or off. Is there some cause or fix for
this?

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.

I deleted shares in My Network Places and disconnected two network drives and
the directory traversal went quickly as one should expect. The network drives
were available at home where the traversal was also slow, but some of the
network shares in the network places were unavailable. Perhaps I did more
than you suggested; the end result is that the speed is back.

Thanks for a solution to something that has eluded my finding a solution for
quite awhile.
