File Reservation in Excel 2008 - cannot openshared file as read-only

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel It used to be that when a document was opened by another user on the file server, you could open the document as read only. Excel now seems to think any of these files that are already opened are now corrupt.

In our network environment, users are on Intel Macs, running 10.5.8 and MS Office 12.2.3. Everyone has access to a file server running Mac OS Server 10.5.8 via AFP and the shared volumes are on an XSAN.

The issue is that when a user opens an ".xlsx" file on the file server that another user has opened, the get an dialog:

"File Reservation - filename.xlsx is being modified by UserName Open as Read-Only, or choose Notify to be alerted when it is available"

The User then selects "Read Only" and another dialog appears:

"Excel cannot open this file. The file might have been damaged or modified from it's original format"

Once the first user closes the document, the second user can open the file with no problem. If the first user then tries to open this file while the second user has it opened, they get the same error.

The odd thing is that if I save this document in the older ".xls" format and a second user attempts to open the file, they get the same initial dialog, but can open the document as read only.

It also appears that Excel does not lock the file the same way when the older ".xls" format is used. A ".xlsx" file will create an invisible file with a similar name preceded with a "~$" (~$filename.xlsx).

Thanks for reporting this issue - we are investigating. Meanwhile, please use xls as a workaround.

We are experiencing the exact same, with the latest MS Office 12.2.4 and Mac
OS X 10.6.2.

We're having a similar problem. We've updated to Office 12.2.4, and doesn't look like it makes a difference.
