~ file showing up on desktop

What do I need to do to get rid of a file entitled "~" that automatically
appears on my desktop? I'm running Windows Me.

The (~) is just the sign that windows uses to represent a temporary copy of
whatever office document you have open. As soon as you close the windows
document you're using the temporary file will disappear from your desktop.
