file size blows up

Word 2002 regular text document with a few graphs from
Powerpoint inserted size of file blows up from about 510k
to 26 MB . The graph inserted etc is very small. If I
copy content of document (including inserts ) and paste
into new document size is normal again. What is causing
this and how can I fix it?

There are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then
revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes
off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save); embedding fonts should
be avoided wherever possible.

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics.

7. Document corruption: See

I experienced a similar error, not related to any
document insertions. File size was 116KB, performed some
font changes and a few other formatting changes and the
file jumped to 47.7MB! When I open the file, Word soaks
up 117MB of physical RAM and 107MB of swapfile space.

I am wondering if the behavior is related to some of the
styles bugs I've been encountering (adding formatting to
a selection of normal text reformats all normal text in
the document). Even then, there would have to be about
400 copies of the entire document stored in version
control to cause that type of file size jump and I didn't
see that many issues. File/Save As does not reduce the b
bloat either, so I am concerned that revision control is
not the culprit...

How are you inserting the PPT slides? If you pick the wrong
option, you basically insert the whole presentation, each time
you insert a single graphic, which adds up fast.

Make sure you COPY from ppt and PASTE AS "graphic", not "insert
as PPT object".
