viewing the file so i can print it, it would be a big big help as
have spent a long time creating it.

Hello Edwyn

well, we sure don't! :-/

there's still a maximum file size limitation in Word, but it only
applies to the raw text amount:

WD2000: Operating Parameter Limitations and Specifications

Operating parameter limitations and specifications in Word

So, in essence, the file _should_ be openable unless it's corrupt. At
least on a powerful system (best bet: on a powerful system that created
the file).

Did you insert the photos into Word, and/or link them? What version of
Word are you using? What error message?

I am using word 2007 on a laptop with 4gb of RAM, the error message
get is:

Word cannot open this file because it is larger than 512megabytes.
(C:\Users\...\photographicportfolio.docx)

I have been able to recover the text so far but, have been still b
unable to open the file to see the pictures and tables

Make a copy of the file and then change the extension from docx to zip. You
should then be able to access the different parts of the document.

Did you succeed?
Does OpenOffice have the same file siize limit?
oops- does OOo handle docx yet?

Using the 'open as zip' trick, you could probably just rip a few megs
of pic files out of the doc, to bring it under 512 MB.
Then open it with Word, and split it into sections.
