File sizes

When sending large (file)size pictures I notice that Outlook splits the
E-Mail into a number of seperate pieces. They are then sent seperately and
then Outlook puts them back together at the other end.

Does anybody know what's the maximum size is before they are split up? I'm
asking as there are often long gaps before the first and last piece is
recieved at the other end.
