Filename and Path

Hi,

Is there a way to add the filename and path so it automatically goes onto all of your documents - to save putting it in each time through AutoText?

Thanks for any help.

It depends what you mean by "all your documents".

If you always create documents from Normal.dot, then yes.

Just open Normal.dot and insert the filename field where you want it to
appear, usually in a footer. If you do not want this info on every page,
just set "First page different" in the Page Set up dialog, Layout tab.

Make a backup copy of your Normal.dot, in case...

To find your Normal.dot, go to Tools > Options > File Locations tab and note
the path for "User templates".

There are problems with putting headers and footers in normal.dot -- some of
the experts who post in this forum recommend that you *never* do it. In
particular, it interferes with mail merges. Personally, I think the
convenience of using normal is worth it; but my mailmerges are so few and
far between that I don't mind swapping in a different normal.dot for the
purpose.

Then the choice are:

Use Normal.dot for the stated purpose and create a special template for mail
merge,
or, use a custom template for all basic documents (And reassign the File >
New button on the toolbar?) so that Normal.dot can be used for mail merge.

I guess it is up to each user to decide which is more convenient.

But you definitely make a good point, I'll try to remember that!

It's not just mail merges: it's the Tools | Envelopes and Labels feature,
which *always* uses Normal.dot for labels. If you have added a header/footer
to Normal.dot (and in Word 2002/2003, even if you have subsequently removed
it, because the empty paragraph remains), the labels will not be aligned
correctly.
