Filename as a variable

I want to set up one spreadsheet (data user) that refers to cells in a large
range of other, identically structured files (date sources).

I wish to enter the name of the data source filename as a variable in the
data user sheet. Is there a way to use a variable filename in an Excel
formula?

The data source files and the data user file are all far too large to merge
together.

Any ideas?

If the "sending" file will be open, you can use =indirect().

But if that sending file will not be open, =indirect() will return an error.
