Files and Folders

When I transfer say 50 files from a CD onto a folder (by Ctrl & A and drag)
the files sometime are not transferred in a date order and then no amount to
trying by using the Sort by, Show ect. will have the files either in a
proper Ascending (by date) or Descanting, which I require, so that the most
recent File is at the top of the list in the folder. Is there another way of
achieving this?

Go to the folder in Windows Explorer. Select "Details" view. Click on the
Date column header to obtain the order you desire. Normally you will have a
Date Modified column or a Date Created column. If you do not, right click
on the column header and select the type of column you want.

The order you set in the "Details" view will be retained in the other views.
You are only changing how you view the folder, not the physical location of
the file on the drive. You may want to review "Folder view" {search topic}
in Windows Help and Support.

I think your instructions refer to Windows XP. Unfortunately my OS is
Windows Vista and I cannot fully apply your suggestions. Thank you
nevertheless for the posting.

The same instructions work in Vista's Windows Explorer. In the upper left,
just to the right of Organize, click the Views dropdown and choose Details.
Then click Date modified. This sorts the files by that field. To reverse the
sort order, click Date modified again. Note that a triangle appears just
above the words "Date modified". If the tip points up, oldest files are at
the top. If the tip points down, then most recent files are at the top.

(To display the menu, choose Organize - Layout - Menu Bar.)

although the files on the CD were in Descending order, they will not appear
in that order in the Folder and they are there marked as Modified on the
same date. When I follow your instructions some of the files are still not
in the strict order of Descending. Is there a way of getting these few odd
files in the correct order?

You might experiment with different date fields. I had a similar problem
recently, and I've forgotten which date fields did the trick, but several
did. Right-click in the header area and choose More. I would think that one
of the dozen+ date fields would allow you to sort in the preferred order.

In some of my folders I have in excess of 100 files. Have you tried to find
a file in such a folder if it is not stacked in Ascending or Descanting
format by which you easily recognize the file?

Why does the order matter? Order is easily changed in Windows Explorer.
