files are hidden

Prior to a format I burned all my docs onto a CD.
Following formatting of hard drive and installation of windows XP
(previously 98SE), all my docs were burned onto a CD.
Now that they have been copied back onto the hard drive, the folders and
files are faint, (hidden).
I know to untick the 'hidden' checkbox, but there are literally thousands of
files in about 25 folders.
I tried 'select all' and then 'properties' but was unable to uncheck en
masse.
Is there a way to un-hide my files in one fell swoop please?

Open "My Computer" go to Tools > Folder Options > View (tab), check under
hidden files "Do Not Show Hidden Files".
