Files disappear after synchronization

We had a complete domain/server switchover while one user was away. Now the
files he created while he was gone seem to have disappeared off his laptop.
They show they were sychronized to the server, but that's impossible because
the server in question no longer existed. Any ideas how to retrieve these
files. They wouldn't have been deleted off the hard drive of the laptop
during the syncing process, would they?
