I loaded Pub 2003 but cannot open previous Pub 98 files. Noton Virus is not the problem as the prevoius Pub 98 files as Norton was not installed.

Greetings, I wanted to provide a bit more information on my problem.

I have 2 computers, one with Publisher 98 and one with Publisher 2003. I have a bunch of files made in Publisher 98 that won't open in Publisher 2003. When I try and click on a publisher file or open the file from within Publisher 2003, I get the error "Publisher cannot open the file". The files are not corrupted during the copy process, because if I copy them back to the computer with Publisher 98, they open fine.

I've found this KB article which describes my problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810041

That article explains a problem with OLE and Norton Antivirus. The problem seems exactly the same, but I don't have Norton Antivirus installed at all.

If anyone can help me in opening all of my Publisher 98 files in 2003, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to provide a bit more followup information.

I have 2 computers, one with Publisher 2003, and one with Publisher 98. I have a bunch of files I made in Publisher 98, but they won't open in Publisher 2003 when I copy them over. I know the files are ok, because I've copied them back and they still open in Publisher 98.

I found this KB article which has the same symptoms as my problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810041

That article references a problem with Norton Antivirus screwing up the conversion, although I don't have Norton Antivirus installed. The symptoms seem to be exactly the same as what is described in that article.

Any help or pointers into how I can get these Publisher 98 files open in Publisher 2003 is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Can you ZIP one of the files up to less than 1 meg and email it to me at my
reply address, so I can see if it opens here?
Thanks

I have attempted to open the files, and they do indeed fail to open with
Publisher 2003.
However, they do open with Publisher 2002, and once saved in Publisher 2002
format, will open in Publisher 2003.
This is identical to an issue reported in the newsgroups for the Publisher
2003 beta - in that case, the files were created with a beta version of
Publisher 98, which had a different DLL set and created different types of
files to the released version. In Publisher 2003, support was removed for
this very obscure filetype.

Try this, right-click any 98 file, properties, opens with... change and browse to
Publisher 2003

I explained the problem (or what I believe the problem to be) in my post of
27/11/03
The solution was for me to open up all of his files in Publisher 2002 and
save them in the Publisher 2002 format.
