Files won't open first time, help!!

Hi all, I work in a school and we're running a Windows 2003 server, all the
client machines run Windows XP and Office XP is installed locally to each
machine.

The problem I'm having is that when I open any Office file from an icon
(i.e. in My Documents folder) the relevent program loads up but the file
doesn't, however, once the program is loaded if I double click the file again
it will load into the program. Does anyone have any ideas why this is
happening, how can I fix it so that the file will open first time?

Cheers,

Andy M

Don't happen to be running Norton antivirus with Office plugin turned on
do you? If so open Norton and disable the office plugin.

If the documents will only open when the application is already
running then you may need to recreate the file associations. Go to
Start/Run and run the following for each Office application you are
having difficulty with. (For example if you do not have Microsoft
Access then you don't need to run the msaccess command)

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Sorry about the late reply, I have tried what you suggested but sadly it did
not work, everytime i try to open a file or just the program i get the
install screen, then the program opens, if i am opening a file i get exactly
the same, the program opens but not the file until i try to open it with the
relevent program open!

I don't think you included the bit about the Windows Installer
launching, that makes me suspect you don't have the correct
permissions to complete the installation of the needed files. Make
sure you have Administration permissions, repair your Office
installation and see if that corrects the issue.
