Files won't open

S

Stefan Bodo

My EXCEL files have suddenly stopped opening when double clicking. A new
file opens but no data. My other Office applications don't have this
problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled with no effect. And....why has
this suddenly happened? Any help gratefully received.

Hi

This usually fixes this problem.

Close Excel
On the taskbar, click
Start>Run
Enter "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
Note the one space between exe and /regserver

then

Nope.

Thanks for the tip but it didn't do the trick. I can get any file by
launching EXCEL then going to open and searching for the file but, as you
can imagine, it's a pain. I'm running Office XP if that helps.

If you uninstalled and reinstalled, your registry entries should be ok.

Open Excel, go to Tools=>Options=>General tab and make sure Ignore Other
Applications is not checked. If it isn't then try reregistering as Ken
explains.

Dear Tom,

That's done it! Nice one! (I don't know what I've done but it works).

Thank you,

Stefan

It may be worth asking this in an XP group, it sounds as though it may be a
file association problem rather than an Excel prob.

If you do find out what the problem is, post back here with the solution
please so folks searching the archives can find it.

The solution was found by Tom. It wasn't a specific XP problem but a general
one.
