Filevault & powerpoint (and excel)

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Since I turned Filevault on, I can't open any powerpoint-files located at my home-directory.
Putting the same file in the shared-user-folder result in the fact that I can open the file. What can I do to make Powerpoint (and Excel) work?

When saving a document, I get the error:

Powerpoint cannot access <computername>esktop:<filename.pptx> because the file has been moved or deleted.

When opening a existing document, I get the error:

Powerpoint cannot open the type of file represented by <computername>esktop:<filename>

I don't use FileVault but I don't see anything in the MS apps that should
create the problem. My guess is that there is something about your FileVault
settings or other System Prefs that's generating the behavior.

Make sure you have both OS X (10.6.1) & Office (12.2.1) fully updated. It
helps if you include tat info when you post

Try doing a simple Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility then restart
your Mac. If the conditions continue check in Apple Discussions for
information involving the FileVault feature:

Dear Bob,

Thanks for your reply. Good point that I have to mention my OS X and Office versions. I use Snow Leopard (10.6.1), so that should not be the problem. But the problem can be that I use Office 12.0.0; however, when I try to update Office, I get an error (probably due to filevault?): I should have at least OS X 10.4.9 or later. But I have!! Since I can't update Office, I keep the problem.

Is there an other option?

Yes on probably both counts FileVault may well be preventing the update,
and 12.0.0 is the original release ‹ I'm surprised you aren't having even
more problems with all of Office. Try turning FileVault off & follow the
suggested method here for getting Office updated. You'll need SP1 (12.1.0),
SP2 (12.2.0) and the most recent interim update (12.2.1):

BTW: This is not a common problem. The first 2 links you referred to go back
to April of this year & November 2008 respectively & the 3rd (from
red308gtsi) is a duplicate of the 1st but from Google Groups server rather
than Mactopia.

All right, I have the solution .

Log in at a(n other) admin account and update office from thataccount. I used my administrator account that was the same account as the account with filevault. And that resulted in the errors!

Sorry, but I was too early; I still have the same problem... Although I have Office 12.2.1 and OS X 10.6.1.

When I login with an user without Filefault on, and I download a ppt from my mail-account, I can open this file without any problems. However, when I login with an user with filevault on, and I download and try to open the same ppt, I still get the following error:

PowerPoint cannot open the type of file represented by naamownloadsoster.ppt

I'm afraid this is more likely a FileVault issue than a PPT issue... And
apparently it isn't a problem with the file itself. I'd suggest that you
inquire in the Apple Discussions Forums for Snow Leopard:

I realize I'm posting to an old thread, but I'm so thrilled that I found a solution to this that I have to share.

I had 3 out of 35 users that had this issue. Filevault on, unable to open or save .xls or .ppt files anywhere within the Filevault image. The could save fine to any folder outside of the FileVaulted user folder.

All three user names and hard drive names matched - i.e. JohnSmith was the drive name and JohnSmith was the name of the FileVaulted user folder.

Once I changed the name of the drive to something else, Mac HD for instance, I was able to save to the FileVaulted folder.
