Fill-color icon options in Word suddenly grayed out

After a reboot this morning, the pull-down menu for the fill-color icon in
Word that I use to color noncontiguous cells in tables suddenly shows only
blank boxes. I've tried customizing the drawing tab to drop that one and
insert a fresh one, but the same thing keeps happening. I've even tried doing
a system restore to a couple of days ago when it last worked. No luck. Any
ideas?

Note that there are two buttons with the same paint-bucket icon. The Fill
Color button (on the Drawing toolbar) applies only to AutoShapes (including
text boxes) and will not show any color selections unless an AutoShape is
selected. The Shading Color button (on the Tables and Borders toolbar) can
be used for text and table cells (or you can use Format | Borders and
Shading).

Stefan, Your suggestion solves some other problems, but not this simpler one.

Suzanne, pointing me to Tables and Borders took care of my current nuisance.

Thanks to you both.
