Filter by Selection

I am looking at a SQL 2000 table in a Project. When trying to do a "filter
by selection" i get an error message "Can not apply filter on one or more
fields specified in the filter property". The table has 145,681 records. I
suspect that this is do to the large number of records but not sure. Is
there any work-around?
