find and fix circular links in Project

Greg Phillips

I get useless error messages in Project 2003 about circular links when I
attempt to link two tasks that have no visible links to any other task. Can
Project display circular links?

No, project can not display circular links. Chances are that you have a link
to a summary task somewhere. They can easily cause this problem. Linking to a
task which is somehow linked to the summary task of the original task will
cause a circular link. Weed them out first and your problem is likely to go
away.

Greg, Jack is probably correct. I've found that adding the Successor column
to your project Gantt can help to identify any summary tasks that might be
the culprit. In general, Project doesn't like it when summary tasks are a
predecessor or successor.

Hi,
To be complete, as such there's not much wrong with summary tasks linking
BUT when you create a circular link by DRAGGING a linked task into a linked
summary, the warning message is the opposits from normal: it warns you but
it accepts the circular link.
