Fine-grained information in ppt footers

I have a rather esoteric question. I am using footers for version control,
so have some information in the footer that is common to all slides, and some
that is done by groups. For example, all charts should have a string with
version number and fixed date (e.g. v5 2007/3/20) and then charts should have
a descriptive string by group (e.g. Section 1).

So, let's say the first 5 slides would have in their footer:

Section 1 v5 2007/3/20

Then the next 8 may have:

Section 2 v5 2007/3/20

Then

Section 3 v5 2007/3/20

etc.

i would like to have a way to cut a new version and date, and only have to
change that once to impact all slides. Currently, if I select all slides and
just change the fixed date string, it changes the footer text as well,
requiring that I change all back, so for example, all slides become:

Section 1 v6 2007/3/21
