Finish date issue

Murthy

I have a fixed units, effort driven task, where I have defined the duration
as 7 days. Assigned two resources. It does show the work correctly as 112
hours, however finish date&time shows as task ending at 2pm, instead of 6pm.
As a result the next FS task is starting at 2pm. What could be the reason.

Strategy Finalization 112 hrs 7 days Mon 9/21/09 8:00 AM Tue 9/29/09 2:00
PM Resource A, Rsource B.

Calendar settings as below:
Tools/Change working time: Non Default time was selectied; 8:00am to 12:00
and 1:00 to 5:00. Under options I see default time is 8:00 to 6:00, and hours
per week as 45, hours per day as 8, and days per month as 20.

(This task is from a project plan I have received for my review).
Thanks
Murthy

The default Start and Finish times on the Calendar Options page DO NOT
control of influence the default start and end of the workday, first of all.
What they really do is define the times Project assumes should apply when
you manually enter a start (or finish) date such as manually entering a
constraint date and do not physically type the time as part of your entry.

The workday in the calendar you quoted is 8 to 5, not 8 to 6, and tasks will
never show finishing at 6pm because the hour between 5 and 6 is non-working
according to your calendar setup - tasks will always end somewhere between 8
and 5, with 5pm being the latest they can show.

There is a possible disconnect between the hours per day and hours per week
values quoted on the one hand and the working time calendar on the other.
Durations are always recorded and calculated in minutes - the "Hours per
Day" and "Hours per Week" setting are conversion factors so Project can know
how many hours, hence minute, you really mean when you enter a duration of
"X Days" or Y Weeks." A duration entered as "3 Days" DOES NOT mean 3
calendar working days - it means the passage of a total of 1440.0 working
time minutes as counted off in the working time calendar beginning from
whenever task starts. To have a duration day of 8 hours and a calendawr
showing work days from 8 to 1 and 1 to 5 with a duration week of 45 hours
probably means you're working 8 to 5 Mon through Friday plus 5 hours on
Saturday, 8 to 2 with an hour break perhaps? If your workday truly is
8am-6pm, that's not 8 hours but 9 (assuming 1 hour lunches). You need to
change the working time in the calendar to reflect the actual hours of work
each day and the "Hour per Day" setting to agree with it. 5 days at 9 hours
per day means the 45 hour work week will get done Mon - Fri without work on
Saturday.

Get the calendars sorted out first, then tackle the issue of why the task is
ending at other than the end of the workday,
