First broken image

T

Todd

I've finally been successful at publishing my site for the first time (using FP2003), but my only .jpg image is broken. I've checked the path and it seems to match the path I've set up in the index.html file. The image appears in FP, but not at the site. I'm sure this seems like a trivial question to all of you, but once I figure out why this image is broken, I'll be back in the game. My site is at www.treesleigh.com. Thank you!

Clicking the link you provide, I get nothing but a directory listing of files -
you need an "index" page on your site to show as the first page to prevent this
list being shown - this depends on your host but it is usually something like
"default.html" or "home.html" or more commonly "index.htm".

Also I notice your site is in the folder "mysite". It should in the home
directory, else your visitors are just going to see that file listing.

Did you upload the "images" folder where the missing image should be?

Ok Andrew, I started over and created the index.html file in the root directory, so now the site is shown instead of the folders. Thanks for that. However, the image is still broken. When you asked if I uploaded the 'images' folder, the answer is actually no because it was already created by my web host, along with a folder named '_private'. I just uploaded the 'logo.jpg' file into the existing 'images' folder. Do I even need the 'images' folder and just upload my image into the root directory along with the 'index.html' file?

Yes Crash, I'm working with a local copy and then publishing to my server. I went through your instructions, but now the URL for the link in 'index.html' is just "images/logo.jpg" and is still broken. Also, what do you mean by "Recalculate Hyperlinks"?

I just started the whole site over from scratch and I'm down to the bare bones, just a little text and one image. Still, the image is broken. It's got to be something with the way the folders are set up or something. Is there a particular way I should have my folders set up on my hard drive? I wouldn't think so. Frustration level has increased from 3 to 4.

Check that case of the filename and link to the file actually match.

Todd:

I would also add my two cents worth: sooner rather than
later, I would suggest you make a trip to your favorite
bookstore and pick up a copy of a book that covers your
version of Front Page. It always helps to understand the
concepts of a program and books are much better at this
than fighting through the software on your own. Taking a
class is another way.

My favorite book on Front Page is by Jim Buyens who
contributes to this forum. There are others that are very
good as well.

Eureka! I figured it out! That particular logo file is actually corrupted somehow. As soon as I uploaded a completely different image, it showed up immediately. When I re-published the site with the old file again, it was broken. I don't understand why, but there must be something wrong with that file (boy, is my logo designer in hot water!). Thanks to everyone for helping. It confirms that I am publishing right, if nothing else.

Make sure your designer didn't give you CYMK version which is for commercial printing, for the web
you need a RGB version.

Thomas: Thanks for the information. I didn't realize there was more than one type of .JPG. I'll ask if they are RGB or not.

Rick: I appreciate your two cents, and you're right, I do need to grab a book on FP. My problem is that I'm an HTML old-timer and have been using notepad and FTP, and I didn't realize that using FP was so different until now. Is the book you recommend called, "Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Inside Out"? It got great reviews on Amazon and I'd rather support an author that is active in discussion groups.
