First Time Creating Table of Contents

It is my first time trying to create a table of contents for a booklet I am designing. I know I'm supposed to be working in outline form, butr can someone explain step-by-step instructions. I used the help feature in word, but it's like reading Greek. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
