First Word Hangs on Initial Edits, Now Excel Joins In.

B

Bill_Capehart

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I have two trouble tickets on Word freezing on initial edits (including with virgin documents). Now this problem is "spreading to excel". I begin to type. The document/sheet hangs with a spinnign wait cursor and the CPU begins to rev up with no remedy other than a Force Quit.

1) I have validated and resolved duplicates the fonts
2) I have verified and repaired both the disks and permissions.
3) I have done scorched earth uninstall/reinstalls so the new documents and spreadsheets are coming in with factory installed "normal" templates.
4) Everything is up to date.
5) the problem is still there (and as i said, is still spreading.
6) Though the log below says that "airport" is the co-hanger, the choice of cohanger changes with crash and seems to be alphabetical. If Address book is open, it'll list that. If Activity Monitor is open, that'll do it. Also I'd don't connect to any Apple Airport wireless system and this particular crash happened when landline with all wireless off (it happens with any networking config including no networking at all).

Hi Bill;

As suggested in my April 11 reply to your thread in the Word group:

"Also, it might be a good idea to retrieve the 10.6.3 COMBO updater for OS X
an apply it over you existing installation."

Have you tried that? What you're describing sounds like it's arising
external of the Office apps.

Bob: I did that twice, the second time this afternoon. It will be a while before I can report back. Let me give it two days to see if this one took. (The hanging is not predictable but inevitable.

Thanks and Fingers Crossed!

The Combo update is also not helping >:-(

Still hanging in more ways than one.

Hi Bill:

Well, *I* think it's your system that has a problem, not Word.

You're quite correct, Word "can" display these symptoms, as can Excel. But
usually, it doesn't. Usually, there's a defined cause: we have tried nearly
all of them.

We're staring down the barrel of an Archive and Install (a clean install of
OS X) here.

One more diagnostic test:

1) Create a new User ID.

2) Log on as that, and try Word in there. Begin by using completely new
documents only, then gradually introduce documents from the old User ID.

If the problem occurs in the new user ID, it's almost certainly the system
(given that we've already done a Remove and Replace).

If the problem does NOT occur in the new User ID, it may be quicker to
simply move your documents over and delete the old User ID than hunt any
further for it.

Hope this helps

Hi Bill;

I understand that you're frustrated & anxious for a solution, but PLEASE do
not pursue the same subject in multiple groups. If it is something that
equally pertains to more than one program it pays to use a newsreader which
enables you to multi-post. In that way responses in either group are seen in
each of the others.

I just wasted 20 minutes researching & responding to your thread in the Word
group only to find that John has spent his time offering the same
suggestions here... Time that could have been given to another user's issue.

one person tells me to issue a new request for each issue (presuming as others have said that Excel and Word freezes are separate), now I'm told not to and bundle both "separate hangs" together. I'm trying to be consistent with the requested policy and now I'm being chewed out on it.

Yeah, sorry Bill :) We're a little short-handed here currently, and
feeling the pressure a bit.

The most important thing is that you actually posted "at all" so we can
learn of the issue and try to help you resolve it.

It would have made it easier if you had posted the same issue into the two
different groups (as I have done here) so we can all see how the issue is
being addressed in each group.

Yes, you should indeed start a new thread for each new issue. In this case,
it would appear that you have one issue affecting two applications.

Just ignore us: It's Tuesday Morning and we're grumpy :)

Cheers
