Fix for Word 2000 Opening Slowly

P

Pat

Apparently the Norton Anti-Virus update for 1/7/04 causes
a problem with Word 2000. To temporarily fix the problem,
open Norton Anti Virus, then select "Options", then
select "Miscellaneous" under the "Other" menu item.
Uncheck the "Enable Office Plug-in" under the "How to
keep Microsoft Office documents protected" menu item.
Clcik "OK", then close Norton Anti-Virus.

I have performed this procedure on 14 computers where I
work and since have not had any problems either opening
Word 2000, or opening a Word document.

Hopefully Symantec will fix this issue soon because this
feature should always be enabled.

Suggestion : not just a "TEMPORARY" fix - leave it turned off anyway.
Not really required, and no loss of security/protection.

You know it makes sense.

Hi Pat,

The Office Plug-in *should* be enabled but the reality is it causes
more trouble than it is worth. If you disable it you will still be
protected by the AutoProtect layer if it is enabled.

The recent issue is just one of the many problems. It can cause Word
to crash on exit, prevent you from opening documents, prevents editing
embedded objects, and the list goes on...

.
What about SAV (Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition)?
There is no 'Options' option when you open the program.

There is no 'Options' option when you open the program.

You may need to be logged on as Administrator to access this facility
in the Corporate Edition (?)

You know it makes sense.

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

Hi Robert,

Norton SystemWorks and Norton CE do not have the add-in but if a
version of Norton containing the add-in was previously installed and
later Norton SystemWorks or Norton CE is installed without
uninstalling the previous version then the DLL controlling the Office
Plug-in is still registered.
