Fix supplied by MS for KB823372 does not work

After receiving and applying the fix supplied by Microsoft in relation
to the KB823372 article, nothing has changed. The new files have been
installed and various different timout values have been tried.
Documents with attached templates residing on a server, which no
longer exists, still take 5-10 minutes to open. The suggested
workarounds require opening the docs but if it takes 10 minutes to
open a doc, the time required to automate the process is still far too
long - especially when some docs hang while waiting for user input.
Does anyone have more information on this before we write code to fix
the fix? Running XP SP1 and Word SP2.
