Floppy disk unreadable

F

Fred

Of course you know to remove the words "removethis" when
answering. My disk has some files which show up as
present but will not open. Message I get is "file is
unavailable" indicating some kind of restriction. When I
check properties, they are NOT marked as "read only".
These files have opened before and I have even printed
some of them. ALL files on the disk, not just some,
are "unavailable". Any ideas on how to open them??

Hi Fred,

By opening and editing documents directly from the floppy disk, you've
managed to trash the disk. It's probably unrecoverable, although a
sector editor might be able to read some of it. (Does Norton still
include a sector editor in the utilities package?)

NEVER work with Word files directly on a floppy. ALWAYS copy the files
to the hard drive, edit them there, and copy them back to the floppy.
See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm for an
explanation.

Hi Fred,

Your disk may have some sort of physical damage. You can sometimes get
around this by using DISKCOPY from the command line to copy the disk's
contents to another disk, ignoring any error messages along the way. You may
then be able to access the files from the copy.

Cheers
