For Word 97 you'll need to install the MS Draw 98 add-in for the connectors to be available.

Ah, thanks, Bob--couldn't remember the name of the drawing add-in, since I
never got around to installing it (and, incredibly, I can't find any KB
articles that deal with [the lack of] connectors in Word 97).
