Folders in PST file duplicated

G

GregD

I reinstalled XP PRO yesterday. Prior to that, I copied the PST files to my
backup drive. After installing Office, I have been trying to get the PST
file to be properly recognized again.

Presently, the folder "Personal Folders" and all folders below that, appear
4 times. I tried creating a new PST so that I could attempt importing, but
I get an error "The operation failed. An object could not be found."

This article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292022
proposes that the registry key be edited, but the key specified does not
exist, and I cannot locate any reference to something close or similar.

Suggestions?

But what verion of Outlook? The version of Windows is less important.

The simplest solution to your problem is to create a new mail profile with
Control Panel's Mail applet. You caused your problem by overwriting an
existing PST with the same name.

I did use the mail applet to create the new PST, and want to inport my old
messages to that, but the error is preventing me from doing that.

Don't use a new PST. Use the old one. Alternatively, create a new one and
open the old one with File>Open>Outlook Data File. Then drag-and-drop items
from the old one to the new one, skipping the duplicates. Never import a
PST if you can avoid it. SOme item information gets lost that way.
