Font not updated when style changed by automatically update document styles

In my dept we have a style template and have made some
changes to that template. One of the changes is to the
font of style "CN Internal Note Text" (was Arial 9 bold
red, now Times New Roman 10 bold red). It also has a
different border on the right (was wavy, now solid).

From Tools>Templates and Addins, I select the new
template, check "automatically update document styles" and
press ok. (I turn it back off again shortly thereafter).
Indeed, the various updates take effect, except for the
font of that style. The border is correct, but the style
for CN Internal Note Text" is still the old font: Arial 9
Bold red.

If I paste the old document into a new one based on the
revised template all the text associated with CN Internal
Note Text style becomes Times New Roman 10 bold red, just
like I want it to.

If you open the templates, CN Internal Note Text, has the
correct attributes. I've tried changing the font in other
ways (e.g. italic) and other fonts, etc. to no avail. This
style simply won't change.

Word 2002 SP-2. Thanks. --Dave

Not an answer, but a workaround: Select the entire document (Ctrl+A) or all
the CN Internal Note Text paragraphs and press Ctrl+Spacebar. Possibly the
formatting was applied directly.

Nope... tried that, the style actually has the wrong
attributes (Arial 9 Bold Red)... as if it was taking
what's in the document over what's in the template...
tried changing another style and got the same results. It
ignores the font name, size, and attributes such as
underline and bold.

Suzanne,

I've got corruption here somewhere... I created a brand
new template and new doc file and can get Word to work as,
so to speak, designed.

I don't know how to uncorrupt my big template... I will
probably hard wire (vba) the font change... ugly, but will
keep me from working Christmas.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Happy Holidays. --Dave
