In my Office (Professional 2003) applications, I see the option to select the
Univers font, but I do not find it in the Font Folder (Control Panel -
Fonts). Where is the Univers font located if not in the Fonts Folder? I ask
because I have received files that, when opened, indicate that the Univers
Font cannot be found.Thank you

Hi K.,

In Word the font that the author of a document used or named is retained in the font list so you can collaborate on documents, even
if you do not have the specific named font on your PC.

With a document open where you're seeing this check in
Tools=>Options=>Compatability=>[Font Substitutions]
and see if Windows has applied a substitute font.

It's also possible that the font has a different internal name than the .TTF file name. Be sure you're looking at the font applet
through the Windows control panel and have the display there to list all fonts.

Thank you Bob -
In my font folder through the control panel, I have the display to list all
fonts - I feel confident that all fonts are displayed. I guess where I am
confused in that in Word, in a blank document, I have the option to select
Univers and Univers Condensed - but neither of those fonts show in the
Control Panel Font Folder with all fonts displayed. Also, when I chose the
Font Substitution option, I see * for the substitute font option. Would you
have any insight as to what the different TTF name for Univers would be or
how I could find that out? Thank you

Thank you -
Why would it show in my font drop-down boxes as a selection - I did not
install it separately.

That font was never included with any Microsoft program - application or

Joann- thank you for supplying the link to microsoft typography. I was able
to see what fonts I should expect installed as part of microsoft products -
where univers and univers condensed came from or why it appears as an option
in microsoft products but not in the font folder seems to be a mystery. I
have check other softwares installed and none have univers as part of their
installation. Go figure!

Thank you for your help

No clue - but if you really want that font, there are scads of fonts VERY
similar if not exactly like it available on the web.

It may have been installed if someone has a Hewlett Packard printer and
installed their printer package instead of just the drivers. It is also
installed with other program installations. If they created a Word or Excel
file or PowerPoint package and sent it to you and embedded the fonts first,
when you viewed the file the font would have been made available to the
program. I don't know if the font will be installed and useable by other
programs however.

I have experienced similar problems when working on a file at work (I always
embed fonts) and then bringing it home where I don't have the same fonts. I
will then see the font listed in my fonts dropdown but can't use it in other
programs.
