foot notes and segment cuts

(Sorry, don't know exact English term: segment cuts? breaks?)

If I use segment cuts on a page, the foot note is moved a bit up on the page
with lots of space at bottom of page. Why is this happening? Can I prevent
it? It's very frustrating - and strange - one isn't able to use both on a
page.

Section Break, probably. Are you using footnotes on a page where one
Section has columns and one Section does not?

Are your Non-Printing Characters showing (Ctrl-Shift-8)? That shows
you where your Section Breaks fall, and also gives an indication of
where extra space might be coming from.

Section breaks. Do you have footnotes set to appear "Below text" or "Bottom
of page"?

Section breaks, thanx Peter and Suzanne =)

Footnotes are at bottom of page. I'm very used to formatting pages and
chapters etc. and to use section breaks (next pager or continuing) and text
breaks, and format footnotes, but this beats me.

It doesn't matter if it's tables and/or columns or not. Using section breaks
and footnotes on the same page is really the issue.

I have running text in one column, and then a table with a table header
above it. I change the 2 column table into 2-3 columns [Format > Columns],
i.e. 3x2 columns, and the section break apperas automatically, as usual,
right after the table header, before the table/columns.

Example:

[line 1] Table 1. The bla bla bla ----------------Section break
(continuing)---
[Line 2] the table w. 2 columns divided into 3 columns
[Line after table] Running text

I know it's "strange" to make 3 columns of a table, usually we use the table
format to make columns within the table, of course. The writer of the book
hade made one long table with 2 columns: words vs numbers, and used the
column "formater" to make 3 columns of the table. To save time we kept that,
instead of making new tables with 6 columns... but I guess I'll just have to
do that on the pages with footnotes... because this takes time, trying to
solve it ;-)

The columns are definitely the issue; see “Section break causes an
unexpected page break in Word†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292074. There's a sort of workaround (may
not work for you) at

Great. Yes, actually page breaks do appear sometimes, and the columns
dissapear as well... also, in print view there's a mysterious blank page...
(link gave the answer)

and yes, we also had a footnote reference in one of the tables. The latter I
solved by moving the reference to the table header instead.

The former... well, I'll just make proper tables instead, dropping the
multicolumn sections (that's the word!).

Many thanx!
