footer different on each page?

How do I make it so the footer is different on each page? Help tells me to
click on "link to previous" to disable it, but it's already disabled. It is
really not worth this headache, and it should not be the default setting that
all footers on each page are the same. Help please.

In Word (2003, at least) File | Page Setup | Page layout tab, check Headers
different on od and even pages.

It's more common that the footer is the same on every page, or groups of
pages, which is why it defaults to them being the same. As Wikipedia notes,
"...are often the same from page to page, with merely small differences in
information, such as page number" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_footer

To answer your questions, in order to create a different footer on each page
(with the exception of different odd/even) then you need to first add
section breaks. Once you have added a section break for each page then the
"Link to previous" command will be enabled. If what you want is different
odd/even footers then as Val noted, in Page Setup on the Layout tab, select
the "Different odd and even" option.
