Footer text appears "squished"

When I try to use the built-in footer style of "Blank (Three columns)" the text is "squished". I've tried changing fonts, font size, alignment, etc. with no luck.

Grouchydad, have you also looked at the Scale and Spacing? (Font dialog, Advanced tab). One or both of those two settings often make text look "squished."
