Footer

I created a footer 12 months ago and remember that it
wasn't easy to sort out. I now want to change the content
of the footer as information has now changed. When I
changed the information and come out of the footer the
text reverts back to the unchanged text. What do I need
to do to change it?

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The footer might contain a field which is updated when you leave the
footer area and return to the main body of the document; that would
explain why Word removes your edits. To see whether the footer
contains any fields, press ALT+F9. Is the text that Word won't let you
permanently edit now replaced by a field code, that is, instructions
within { }? If it is, then the "protected" text is certainly data
inserted by a field.

Whatever field is in the footer, you can delete it or convert it to
plain text; in either case you will get full control over the contents
of the footer. Note, however, that Word provides many useful fields.
For example, some fields display user or document information; if you
want to change that information, it would be wiser to do so directly,
instead of deleting the field and typing the modified data into the
footer. In other words, let me suggest that you try to find out what
kind of field is in your footer before you decide what to do.

You can use Word Help to find out what a field does; just search for
the field name, which is the initial uppercase part of the field code.
