Footnote problem in Word 2000

I am running Word 2000 in Windows 98 SE.
Word seems to be treating automatic numbered footnote references as
text. I delete the reference but the screen tip and the footnotes
remain. Automatic numbering is intermittent, works with some notes
and not others. Notes can be moved, via moving the reference, but the
old footnote remains at the bottom of the page, as well as the defunct
screen tip.
Automatic numbering works for new footnotes, as normal.
I think I messed with the problem reference, number 12 of 30 or so, by
selecting and deleting the paragraph which contained it. Do you have
to deal with the references always separately? All references, before
and after #12 are behaving strangely.
Can someone help with this problem?
