Footnotes broken

I am using Word 2003. When I try to add a footnote, I cannot write in the
footnote pane. This has only started happening today. Any ideas?

Hi Ben

I have done both of these things. This only seems to be happening in normal
view (print view works OK). Thinking normal.dot might be the problem, I
substituted a copy of this file dating from February when I am sure I didn't
have this problem. That didn't work either. I understand an option now is to
delete normal.dot and allow Word to recreate a new one, but I want to avoid
this if possible, because I understand I will lose all my customisations.
Have you any other ideas?
