footnotes in Index

Using Word 2002 in Windows 7:
I know how to mark and create an Index in Word 2002 and it works well.

However, when I mark something within a footnote it appears in the index
just by page number. Is there a way to differentiate it from regular
text and make it appear in the index with the listing showing it to be a
footnote on that page?

For example as

...... 49, n.32
[page number][fn#]

I found this interesting suggestion

which gave me an idea.

My thought is to use (in footnotes) the "page number format" box so that
these page numbers appear in italics. Then, I could insert a note under
the Index heading which would alert the reader that page numbers in
italics refer to text in the footnotes.

It does not produce my desired note numbers but at least the reader
would know where to look for the indexed item: among the footnotes.

Any other suggestions? Is there an add-on that will do what I want?

I believe your solution, to use formatting, is the easiest way to do this.

Alternatively, you could make use of the "Cross-reference" field in the
Mark Index Entry dialog box and type in the information that you need.
The downside is that this will be *instead of* a page number (which
probably isn't what you want).
