Footnotes in Word

I'm working on a Word 2000 document. There is too much space at the bottom
of the page (between end of text; beginning of footnotes). How do I reduce
this blank space?

I tried playing with the page layout. Can't figure out what "gutters" are,
or how to configure everything to solve the problem.

As for gutters, they're mostly an aid for the math-impaired; in most cases
you can just increase the left or inside margin by the same amount and
achieve the same thing.
