I have a long document converted from WordPerfect to Word 2003. It contains many footnotes, with renumbering starting at each chapter, where there are section breaks. Most of the footnotes converted OK, but a few skip numbers. I have inserted new section breaks. When I select a footnote reference in the document (not the footnote's number below), such as 2 (which should have been 1) and choose Insert | Reference | Footnote, then set 'Start at' to 1, and 'Numbering' to Continuous (or I have also tried the Restart each section option) and click Insert (or Apply, when it is available) -- nothing happens; the footnotes don't renumber. If I try to insert an entirely new footnote before the first one that is numbered 2, the number is not in order. I get another footnote 2, never 1 in this chapter. How can I get the footnotes to renumber and also insert new footnotes in this converted document?
