What happened was that I recently put in a new hard drive and upgraded to
Windows XP, so I had to reinstall PSP. I forgot to change the resize option
to "smart," so when I resized the photo it came out yucky. After I posted
the note, I thought that maybe there was something I had overlooked, and
there was, so I tried again, and the photo came out okay.

Since you are interested, I posted the page again with three photos: PSP
wrong, PSP smart, and PE.
http://www.dipika.org/~exp/paintsh_photosh_compare.htm

The PE is a tad brighter, but not enough to make a difference. What I
realized from this whole thing is that I would rather work in PSP than in
PE. My thanks to you for recommending it.

There's been lots of discussion about photo editors on this ng recently.
The only one I have ever used is PhotoDraw V2, so I don't know a whole lot
about photo editors. Which one would you recommend to someone that knows
very little about using photo editors (that doesn't cost a fortune)? Is
PhotoDraw that bad? It doesn't seem to be mentioned. I gather that
Photoshop has a steep learning curve and maybe isn't for amateurs? I have
quite a few pictures on my website that need some help. Some of them
weren't too good to start with, so I'm not too sure an editor will be that
much help.

If you are happy with MS PhotoDraw, there is no reason to switch, as it can just about everything
that PhotoShop can do, especially when it comes to creating or modifying images for the use on the
web.

I still use MS Image Composer, and have yet to see a reason to change.

I've got some great photo editors but the one I go for most if photoimpact
from www.ulead.com it's very easy to use. some things it doesn't do as well
as Photoshop but some things it does better (faster/easier) such as quick
touch ups on low value pictures like for a car-lot or something along those
lines. it's got a nice contrast/ brightness/ rgb panel for quick changes
and hitting f4 will pull up a pretty nice file size optimizer.

I don't know about PhotoDraw because I have never used it. If you are
satisfied with it, then there would be no reason to change, but I gather
from your note that it does not seem to do everything you need. Paint Shop
Pro costs about 100 dollars, more or less, but you can download a 30-day
trial to see whether it fits your needs. I bought Photoshop Elements in a
store, so I don't know whether you can get a trial or not. Photoshop
Elements and Paint Shop Pro both take a while to learn. You'll need some
patience.

In any case, it's pretty hard to make a good photo out of one that is not
good to start with, so if you want to try a different editor, I would
suggest that you start with a trial version of something or other and see
whether it's what you want before you shell out a lot of bucks.

After reading all of your replies, I've decided to just stick with what I
have & know pretty well how to use. Don't have the time or the inclination
to learn a new photo editor. Thanks for all of your input!

I'm in the process of upgrading my website using FP2003. Got pretty tired
of the cloud background I've been using!

I agree.

But thought I'd mention that CompUSA has Photoelements 2.0 with a 30$ rebate until Aug 11 - that makes it only 69.00 bucks. If anyone is interested.

I have no affliation with Compusa - in fact I hate them...but money is money.

Check Walmart's price. I think it is about $58 every day.

I will ! Thanks...that's a smokin price.

I like PE, but having shelled out big bucks for PS6 a while back...I hate spending more money with a good excuse for requesting a purchase order from the wife :)
